In December 2011 I received a Windows 7 Phone, the Samsung SGH-i917. For about 2 months the phone worked fine, I could sync it to my computer without any problems using the Zune software. One day, the connection just stopped working, and ALL the computers in my house are not able to recognize the phone. I get the message 'USB Device Not Recognized' as soon as I connect the phone. When I look up the phone in the Devices list, it shows up as Unknown Device in the USB Controllers section (in other words, I do not get a Windows Phone section in my Device list at all). The error message associated with the unknown device is 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)'.

I have tried the Microsoft support website, notably http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2410180 , none of the suggestions work.
I have also tried the following steps that appeared promising initially posted in another thread:

1. Make sure Zune software is installed and open/running.
2. Open Device Manager
3. In 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' delete all entries that are “USB root hub”.
   
4. Scan for hardware changes.
   
5. If phone shows up when connecting it, great! Otherwise continue down the list.
6. If your phone shows up Unknown Device
   
7. Right click the Unknown Device in the USB Controllers Section - this is your phone.
8. Click Update Driver
9. Click Browse my computer for driver software
10. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
11. Click Next
12. Click Microsoft in the left column list
    
13. Click Windows Phone 7 in the right column list
14. Finish the wizard and you're done. Zune should now see your phone.

Unfortunately when I come to step 12, the Microsoft entries do not include Windows Phone 7. The driver also does not appear in the c:program fileszunedrivers.
Here are my phone specifications:
1. Phone Manufacturer Samsung
2. Phone Model SGH-i917
3. Mobile Operator AT&T
4. Phone Operating System version 7.0.7390.0
5. Zune software version 4.8.2345.0
6. Computer Operating System version Windows 7 Home 64-bit (same problem on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit or XP Professional 32-bit system or Vista 32-bit system)
